Ankylosaurus and the ankylosaurs

I can't help but wonder if ankylosaurs were in fact actually capable of planning ahead. I know there is no evidence for it, but I can't help but wonder.

Conventions on infoboxes, Primeval and other wiki policies

Greetings everyone. I don't know if anyone will read this, since this wiki appears to be dead, but we'll see. Firstly, I was thinking of starting two infobox templates, one for series and one for species, similar to the one on the Allosaurus and Walking with Beasts pages. However, these would be dedicated templates, and they would be applied to all articles that they would apply to. Thoughts?

Secondly, I'm a little fuzzy on our policies regarding the show Primeval. Does content relating to this belong on the wiki? I couldn't find any policy we've got on it and there seems to be some controversy over the issue. Can we get a consensus on this?

Thirdly, we really need some sort of policy on how articles are to be written, for instance Walking wi…

T. rex Size

Hey, everybody!

I feel like the Tyrannosaurus rex and Giganotosaurus pages need to be updated a bit. Tyrannosaurus' max length was probably about 15 meters, and recent studies seem to show it was also about 10 tons in weight. Also, new research suggest that T. rex actually was bigger than Giganotosaurus, being only about 6-8 tons, being shorter and being about the same length. Here are some sites saying T. rex was 15 meters:

http://animals.howstuffworks.com/dinosaurs/tyrannosaurus.htm

http://dinosaurs.sciencedaily.com/l/283/Tyrannosaurus-rex

http://www.dinodictionary.com/dinos_tpg2.asp

Here are some saying it was 10 tons:

Important decisions

I've noticed that lately we've had a lot of articles relating to Primeval and Prehistoric Park. This raises a big question: are they really needed?

The wiki was originally designed for the Walking with series. (I know PP is interconnected with all this, but in a complicated way.) The idea of other series pushing in isn't exactly the best thought.

Primeval, although it is created by the same people that made the Walking With series, isn't neccesarily part of the series itself. There are quite a few differences.

But this is really for the users to decide, whether they should be kept or not. The other two series have their own wikis as well.

In any case, The Paleontologist should have a big say as well, because he's the most active registered cont…

Improvement thingummys

Well, first I'd like to say that I'm sort of officially back, after a long absence to the wiki. There's a reason. Some people from that wiki have also meandered over here (and one was the original creator!). You know who you are.

Anyway, I activated the chat feature, which is on the right side of the Wiki Activity screen now. It's an easier way to make a long discussion instead of the page comments.

I'm also thinking of designing a custom infobox we can use for our articles. Any thoughts on this?

Planet Dinosaur

Hey guys, I discovered a video of a new BBC series called "Planet Dinosaur". I think it will be released in December.

Since we are writing about Primeval and Prehistoric Park in this wiki, do you think we should also create articles about Planet Dinosar here?

Aside this, if you want the link of the video, here it is:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCMkV_GYf4w

Improvement

First, I'd like to say that I'm really pleased to see this wiki still running. This is probably due almost entirely to The Palaeontologist, so well done!

Although, there are still a few points I'd like to improve on:

  • Sea Monsters: A Walking with Dinosaurs Trilogy only had a small amount of content on each sea, and I think we can do much better.
  • Though I have no quarrel with adding scientific facts to the articles, we mustn't completely neglect the role of a species in the series, because this IS a Walking with... wiki after all.
  • Unfortunately, the Cast and Crew articles are still mainly all stubs.
  • See User blog:Toothless99/Articles needing to be created for articles that still need creation. We can reach 200!

Sadly, I haven't seen much of Walkin…

Liopleurodon

I was writing the Liopleurodon article on Wiki Prehistorica, and this came to my head, and since it's WWD-related I'm putting here.

They never really specified the Liopleurodon species, did they? Wikipedia doesn't know either (gasp!), so I'm asking here. What do you think?

Personally I think it's L. ferox, as it's the one we know the most about.

WWD sequels

I know some here never saw Walking with Beasts and Walking with Monsters. But for those who did, what were your favorite bits? And how could these series be inducted into the wiki (i.e. what's most important to have more info on, etc.)?

And I know this is completely off-topic, but it just came to my head: Should we include the paleoflora that was mentioned in the WW trilogy?

Halloween special

Since it's Halloween, I figure I should ask this: what's the SCARIEST creature in the WWD series? My vote goes to one of the theropods---either T-rex (because not only is it SCARY, it's colored an ominous shade of black) or the raptors (it's all Jurassic Park's fault)! Although Dunkleosteus, Megalodon, Tylosaurus, and Liopleurodon from Sea Monsters are pretty SCARY too, and Ambulocetus and Gorgonops put up a fair fight. And WWC is just SCARY because there are actors who actually want to be cavemen to make money--it's creepy :)

Triceratops and Torosaurus...the same?

A recent suggestion by Jack Horner + crew (and a hot debate on Wikipedia currently) is that Triceratops and Torosaurus are the same species. Now I think that's bogus. But here's the links if you want to see:

What do you think? Or do we just need more information to tell if this is so?

A possible thought-provoking question that's been bugging me for a while

Let's face it. Remakes happen. One day it's going to happen to Jurassic Park (as fine as it is already), and it's probably going to happen to WWD too. If they did, what other creatures would you like to see recreated?

I'd definitely want to see Triceratops in full health, not sick or dead!

Interesting new Plateosaurus fact

Just an intruiging ditty here about how Plateosaurus walked I found. They say it was unable to take a quadrupedal pose as its hands faced to the side instead of the front (as true of all theropods now). I think this is rather silly, as all reconstructions of constantly bipedal Plateosaurus I've seen look something like

Balancing on that (because the tail is no longer dragging) would be impratical and plain goofy-looking.

What's your say

The dreaded shrink ray...how do you feel about it?

Recently a thing has occured among monster sea creatures many call "the shrink ray." When a creature gets affected by this their size estimates drop, sometimes dramatically. Sadly this has happened to many of the Sea Monsters trilogy's beloved stars.

Take Liopleurodon. It goes to 90+feet and then shrinks by a lot to only 33-40 feet.

Tylosaurus has shrunk a bit too, with estimates of 50 feet down to 33-36 feet.

And even Leedsicthys, yes the superfish himself, has gone from a massive and cool 100 feet to...you guessed it, 33-40 feet, with absolute maximums at 50-60 feet.

Personally, I think this is all total garbage. But what do you think about it? Styracosaurus Rider 18:45, October 27, 2010 (UTC)
