Homo heidelbergensis (meaning "Heidelberg Man") were hominids that lived from Great Britain to South Africa. They were the direct ancestors of Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens.

Facts[]

Homo heidelbergensis were generally taller on average than Homo sapiens ironically, reaching between 1.80 and 2.15 metres tall. They developed another kind of tools, the spears, which were very useful for ranged hunting in groups.

A group of Homo heidelbergensis was shown hunting aMegaloceros down in the last episode of "Walking With Cavemen". One member of the group is killed by the giant deer and the others perform a ritual on behalf of his death, being the first creatures to realise that the death of someone is his end and their rituals are a way to say goodbye to the person who died.
